\the sun lit a patch of carpet that years of exposure had changed from dark gray into a lighter shade . i heard nathan , so clearly , so very clearly : no , we can't afford a new carpet .

i put down the phone , which rang back almost immediatly ." if there is anything we can do , it shall be done ," said roger ." please , will you let us know when the funeral is ? minty , i recognize that this is the most tragic , intolerable situation ."
was this the moment to point out that roger had made such a mistake in dismissing nathna 's accumlation of experience for the sake of change ? should i also mention that he had almost certainly driven nathna to his death ?
"i know you will have mixed feelings...."
"no, roger . not  mixed feelings . very straightforward feelings .

there was nothing mopre to add . roger was a businessman , and i was a widow and , however much i might long to connect , there was no no chance , again , i terminated the conversation and took the phne off the hook . not a moment too soon  , for it was almost too much , and i could not let go . not yet perhaps never  ?

the enormity of nathan 's solence was an excruciating reminder of how silent we had been during his life . i had failed to comfort him . i had not stroked his check . we had not waited stoically together in a doctor's waiting room .
nor had my phone rung ths morning , and i had not picked it up to hear him say : " minty , i've got something to tell you ..... it will be a shock ."

WASHINGTON -- Nhiều tin bất lợi cho thị trường lao động Hoa Kỳ hôm Thứ Tư 23-5-2012.

Công ty Hostess Brands Inc. -- nổi tiếng với hiệu bánh mì Wonder, bánh Twinkies và Ding Dongs -- cho biết nếu không giải quyết được gánh nặng tài chánh xuyên qua Chương 11 Luật Phá Sản, công ty sẽ giải thể.

Công ty Hostess đã gửi thư thông báo cho toàn bộ 18,500 công nhân khắp Hoa Kỳ, cảnh báo rằng công ty có thể sẽ bán, có thể sẽ co cụm và có thể sẽ giải thể. Trường hợp tệ hại nhất, sẽ làm 18,500 công nhân mất việc, trong đó có 900 công nhân tại California.

Trong khi đó, tiểu bang California cho biết cuối tháng này sẽ phải cắt bỏ tiền bảo hiểm thất nghiệp liên bang đang cấp cho 93,000 người thất nghiệp ở California vì đã lãnh hết 20 tháng gia hạn của liên bang đối với người thất nghiệp dài hạn.

Cắt giảm như thế sẽ tiết kiệm cho công ty HP khoảng 3 tới 3.5 tỷ đôla/năm vào cuối năm 2014, trong khi công ty chuyển hương tập trung sản xuất thiết bị di động và máy tính bảng.

Chỉ có 1 tin lạc quan, nhưng chưa xảy ra: cải tổ y tế sẽ tạo ra gần 99,000 việc làm mới tại California, theo bản nghiên cứu của Bay Area Council Economic Institute.

there were assorted letters from doctors  with addresses in harley srteet . one reported the results of an eye test . another a blood test , all routine , all normal , negative , nonthreatening . the top letter on the pile was diffirent . it read : " dear mr lloyd . as we agreed at our consultation , i have made arrangements for you to see my colleague , my oxford , at the london heart hospital . i have explained my concerns - blood pressure , murmur , etcetera , and he will proceed with the investigation . if you would kindly get in touch with him directly ...."
the letter was dated six months ago .
i reread the polite sentences . behind the bland " concerns " was hidden a colded allusion , nathan , the consultant was suggesting , displayed a cluster of symtoms and was required to do something about it .
nathan had filed to do so .
angrily , i snatched up th letter . why ? and why had he not told me ?
it would habve been so easy to manage . we could have attended the apointment together . i would have sat meck as a mouse reading county life or dog-eared coppies of hallo ! while thee highways and byways of his artieries and the chambers of his heart were flagged up on a screen . as we listened to the verdict of sewhat was wrong , i know i would have reached out and taken his hand .

nathan pushed the fork into the earth , reached into the ground qith both hands , and extarcted a bundle wrapped in a white wool shawl ," this is my secret grief , minty ," i heard him say in the restless , half-concious interlude .
the bedroom was airless sucked dry oof its oxygen , and o laternayed between sweating and shivering , which , i supposed was shock . could i have done more ? answere ; yes , i could . was nathan so unhappy ? answere , yes , he was .... i fled upstairs to the spare bedroom . the bed was not made up but i slipped into it between the bare mattress and fold duver and stared into the darkness .
i could not see the nose painting on the wall above me in the dark , but with an interdnal eyes , i traced those roses . i calcilated their dimensions , the arrrangement of the shapes on the canvas , i struc up an intimate accaintance with each shade and tint , ticking them off on my fingers : chalk white , clottqed  cream , weak tea , and the blood brown of the darkening petals scattered at the base of the vase .
whne i could bear it no longer , i slid out of bed , reached up , and turned the painting to the wall .
there , they had gone .
a little later - how long ? i found myself in nathan 's study . i open his filing cabinet to reveal the sections neatly ;abeled in black ink , " insurrance " ( an orange file ) ." house " ( a hblue file ). " lawyer " ( red) " health " ( yellow ) .
why had he chsen yellow for health ? it was not a good color .

in between these conversations , i did my best to make a list . but it proved beyond my powers . i struggled with words such as " probate ," " death registration ," and " newpaper an nouncement ," but they refused to slot into their palces .
"mum ," lucas ran into the house , and hurled himself at me ." mum , read me a story ." he was glowing with exercise , and looked so winning and wholesome that my film director who happened to be passsing would have scooped him up .
a hand slipped into mine ." hallo , mummmy ." it was felix ," you look sad , are you sad , mummy ?"
i bent down and scooped them both into a hug . their  small hard heads butted into my chest . they were now my entire responsibility .
nathna was with me throughout that fear - filled night . we were in the sitting room  . the clock ticked on the hal;f-moon table by the window and we were arguing about it . nathan thought it would be safer on the mantelpiece ." please do as i wish . minty ." i looked up from a card of paint samples and heard myself say ," do you think eastern beige would look right in here ? eastern begige ," he retorted ." compost more like . nathan was in the garden , in his brown corduroys , favorite blue shirt , and a pair of wellington , digging under the lilac tree . on the landing , i was struggling to iron a shirt that , however  skilfully i strioked and stretched it , would not lose its creases .

the dark has never held any real terrors for me . it was the time in which hot , pleasurable things were accomplished . it was the moment to dream , to plan , to sleep ; to touch a warm sleeping body , and amrvel at its beauty , or its power , or to realize that you hated it .
but when i went to bed that night i was afraid .
there were scvattered clues that i had come home and gone through the motions but i cannot remember much . a water fall of socks , underpants , and trousers flowed out of the boys' linen basket . in the bathroom , my face flaanned was damp . in the bedroom , myshoes had beenput away in the cupboard . in the kitchen , the dishwasher had been swirched on and was ready to unload and a half-eaten tin of tuna from the boys' supper was wedged between the cheese and bacon in the fridge .
eve and i had whispered to each other while the boys romped upstairs ." so dreadful , minty ." her complexion combined an agitated red and white ,

eventually , there was a knock on the door , and one of the undertkaers , an older man who introduced himself as keith  addressed a series of questions to rose . it was clear that he regarded her as the window .
" excuse me ." i interjected ." i am the current mrs lloyd ."
keith's gaze slid between us . there was a modicum of embarrassment but  little surprise ." then i'll await your instrucctions ., mrs lloyd . your husband 's body will have to go to the mortuary for the postmorten . but after it is released we can discuss the details ."
i cast around in my mind . " there 's a church near us . i'll find out who the vicar is ..."
"oh ,no ." said rose ." nathan would have wanted to be buried at altringham , minty . where his parents are ....."
"altringham ? that's too far away ." i cried .

she described the slap of the water on the side of the clinker fishing boat , the hiss and heave of the sea , the only smell and texture of mackered .
" the thing i remember most is the rain . sometimes it was hard and slanted in from the west . at others , it was as soft as a caress and seeped into your clothing . however carefully we put away the mackered lines at home , they were always knotted when we got them out of the the cupboard the next year .nathan was impatient and demanded that we buy new ones .but i said no and i learned the routines . i planned we had a good meal on the first night , and  i bought a heater to ensure we weren't cold . by day two , he seem always to breathe easier and he slept differently . more quietly . when he picked up the book  i'd chosen for him . i knew the best part of the holiday was beginning . it was a sort or healing from the frazzle of the year . i don't think we would have survived so long without cornwall ."
"i never let him go to cornwall ." i said ." what was the point ? it was your torritory . i thought it would be good for him to kook at different things . i thought a little greek or italian sun would work magic , but he never liked the heat . you knew that . and the boys were too young . the heat made them fretful and difficult to marrage ."
but i was tired too , always so tired ." rose said ." until the children were older . i didn't realize , and it wasn't a question of accepting the tiredness , i just thougfht that was the way  things were intil i began to feel better . really better . by then , it was too late and nathan had looked elsewhere .
when the doctor arrrived , he examined nathan ." it looks very much if it was a heart attack ." he told us . writting notes and organizing the paper work .

she shook her head , and a strand of hair worked loose .
"that cn't be . minty . we are all in this . we are his family ."

rose adopted the voice i sometimes heard in the office when either sam or poppy rang up . it was ultrasoothing . i used to think it rather silly and false until , fater i had had the twins . i realized it was a means of staving off panic .
"no ." my rejection of the idea was instant . i did not want her softness ansd comfort stealing children .
i glanced at my watche . increadibly . i had been here only three quartes  of an hour or so . i wondered ( courtesy of gisela ) who else knew and was even now telephoning others , or the florist to order flowers . with deepest sympathy . i wondered if the clocks would stop . who would cry genuine tears , and who would not . i wondered if nathan had been a tiny bit ready . whether he had thought about his death at all . or if he was circling up there , cursing .
"why don't we sit with him ?" rose suggested ." he won't be here of much longer ."
i chose a chair close to the body . already nathan was drawing further away , much as his body must be stiffening " your children had thair childhood with him ." i was fierce with the unfairness for my boys ." mine won't ."
rose sat down on the sofa and her eyes met mine ." yes , minty , there was that ."
after a moment or two , rose began to talk about the old days when she was married to nathan  . every yaer , they  had gone on holiday to priac bay in cornwall , always to the same cottage .

"and ? what else , minty ? my looks , my wit ....?"
"naturally , your serious bank account . and , nathan , you married me because ?"

in his hours of need , nathan had not defected to rose because he wished to talk over his options or to block out a new future . he would have done that with me and i would have given him better  advice . no , no , nathan had turned to rose because he craved her comfort , the long history , her sweetness in his hour of deepest trial , her reassurance .
behind me . rose entered the room and closed the window . she had gotten herself under control and spoke calmly .
"i opened it to allow his sprit to go . i think ...i believe it's customary ." she clicked the atch into place , and i had an almost irresistible urge to laugh at the notion . rose fiffled with the curtain , a calico thickly interlined and expensive , and i imagined nathan 's spirit forcing his way past it up into the dark somewhere .
"when the undertakers arrive , we shall have to make some decision ." rose nerved herself visible because once this quiet interlude was over a process would  begin ." when i've spoken to sam and poppy ." she turned to me , as if appealing for help with suh an appalling task , and i tasted fear at what lay ahead of me too ."i dread that . they will be devastated ."
"decisions ?"
"all of us must decide what we want . we must try to think of what he would have wanted . poppy and sam will have views .?"

fater all his years at vistermax , nathan deserved that at the very least . dull peter and his godd hearted carolyne in the navy blue suite and gold buttons - both of them , not so long ago , had eaten twice baked cheese souffle , chicken in ginger , and bitter maraschino cherries at our table . on nathan 's behalf , i felt a black , killer rage dig in for the duration .
rose choked and made a sound like a small animal in didtress . she heaved herself round , placed both hands on the edge of the sink and retching , leaned over it , i got up , filled a glass with water , and handed it to her .
she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand ." one should never drink brandy too fast ."
now it was my turn to slide a hand around her shoulders and press her into a chair ." rose are you getting drunk ?"
a bit color crept back into her cheeks . " nathan had only been here fifteen minutes or so . he said he wanted to talk over what had haoppened , and how he was going to mange the changes . he wanted to sound me out ," she must have registered  myinstinctive flinch because she added , " he would have talked to you , minty ."
that was unanswerable and none of rose's business " don't say that ."
she was taken aback and struggled with her answer . ." afer the doctor and the undertakers have been , you must go ."
i left rose in the kitchen and fled back to the cold sitting room , the smell of spring , and nathan ." why didn't you ring me ," i demanded of the still figure .
"you married me because....." went the stupid , dangerous game we sometimes played in the early days , and there was only one rule .

rose was taking ablut her own sacking , as i had been talking about mine ." no ," i had to defend him because i wanted to get it right . " he wasn't that sentimental . he knew his worth . he would ghave fought . he would have been angry ....very angry , so angry his heart couldn't stand it ."
rose turned away .
my gaze lit on objects around the kitchen . a white jug . a wicker shopping basket by the dooor into plastic bags had been stuffed .
nathan had his vulnerabilities ." rose offered ." everyone does , rose woulsd have known which to press ."
the picture assembled of nathan listening to the delicately phrased insults of the sacking , i knew , i knew , that roger's careful cruelry would have smashed that his heart was then nathan must have felt the first intimations that his hear was faltering . did he register then the choke and stutter if his blood , the pain of the squeezed muscle , and refuse to call out ? god help us , nathan preferred to die ( and did ) rather than ask the man who had just sacked him for help .
rose added , " peter shaker is taking over ."
"well , that would have killed him if nothing else did ."
rose's lips curved in wry amusement . " yes , it probabaly did ."
i thought , i will force myself to belive that roger chose peter over nathan for a good reason .

mu knuckles whitenened with the pressure ." why here ?"
still clutching the phone , rose told me the truth ." roger sacked him this morning ."
"sacked ! " the news was brutal enough to bring the blood rushing into my face .i pressed my hands against my cheeks ." por nathan ." rose put down the phone ." so they got him in the end ." i said ." they always do ."
"vistemax is hardly the gulag ." rose leaned against the sink ." " and nathan had a good run with them ."

(AP) FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Female soldiers this week are moving into new jobs in once all-male units as the Army breaks down formal barriers in recognition of what has already happened in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The policy change announced earlier this year is being tested at nine brigades, including one at Fort Campbell, before going Army-wide. It opens thousands of jobs to female soldiers by loosening restrictions meant to keep them away from the battlefield. Experience on the ground in the past decade showed women were fighting and dying alongside male soldiers anyway.

Col. Val Keaveny Jr., commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team that is among units piloting the change, told The Associated Press that for the last decade it has been common to have women temporarily attached to the combat units and serve alongside them.

"Women have served in our Army since the Revolutionary War and they have done phenomenal work and continue to do so today," he said. "There is great talent and now we can have it in the headquarters of infantry, armor and cavalry."

Under the new policy, female officers and non-commissioned officers will be assigned to combat units below the brigade level. The change will open up about 14,000 new jobs for women in the military, but there are still more than 250,000 jobs that remain closed to women.

The new jobs within combat battalions are in personnel, intelligence, logistics, signal corps, medical and chaplaincy. The Army is also opening jobs that were once entirely closed to women, such as mechanics for tanks and artillery and rocket launcher crew members.

The 4th Brigade draws its lineage from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, whose World War II heroics led to books and a TV miniseries called the "Band of Brothers." But these days, Keaveny said there are more than 350 women already serving in the brigade and they will be opening 36 new jobs to women in the battalions.

"For the last 10 years, we have been fighting alongside women. In my experience I have seen that the Band of Brothers quickly integrate their sisters and they are a family," he said.

Capt. Elizabeth Evans, a 44-year-old mother of five, is one of the first women assigned to the combat battalions. She will be serving as a battalion S1, whose job is to oversee personnel issues within the battalion, including awards, casualties, human resources and other administrative responsibilities. She said there is a lot of pride associated with serving in an infantry unit.

"I think there's a rich history in the 101st and especially the 4th Brigade Combat Team," she said. "To me that means something. It means something to be a part of not necessarily history, but to be a part of a once all-male battalion."

Evans, who has deployed to Afghanistan, noted that women have been serving in dangerous jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan for 10 years.

"With the fluidity of the battlefield and how there are no front lines, it just makes more sense to me to allow women to come into those roles, those noncombat staff roles," she said.

Keaveny said these changes will have minimum impact on where women will be located while deployed. Battalion headquarters are generally located at bases where women were already stationed and the Army has been using female engagement teams to reach out to civilians in remote areas.

"Quite honestly we don't see there's going to be any friction," he said.

Kayla Williams, author of "Love My Rifle More Than You: Young and Female in the US Army," served with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team under the 101st Airborne Division during the initial invasion into Iraq as an enlisted soldier in military intelligence.

Early in the war, she wasn't even issued plates for her ballistic vest "because females can't serve in combat," she said. She said once she was temporarily attached to an infantry battalion at Fort Campbell that had no female latrines.

As an Arabic translator, she was attached to infantry units rather than assigned, but doing the same things as her male infantry counterparts, including going on foot patrols and living in remote combat outposts.

"Women have been serving in very forward deployed roles, and women have been serving side-by-side with combat arms personnel, just not in a formalized assigned method," said Williams, who is a fellow at the Truman National Security Project.

She said these incremental changes could improve the professional development of both men and women in the military, but acknowledged that the military still has a long way to go to leveling the field for women.

"It is my personal opinion that the institutionalization of women as not being able to serve in combat arms has a way of subtly allowing sexism within the military," she said.

Evans said she hopes the expanded roles will encourage more women to consider a career in the Army.

"I think for females in general, it's bringing us new avenues for accomplishments, for professional growth. In my personal belief, we are a part of supporting our infantryman," she said.

my mendacity had a false , brassy note but it clung to it . a tap dripped and the fridge emitted a muted electrical choke . we both knew that  i was not tlling the truth , and rose was debating how to handle my ignorance of something that was , clearly , important .

i could not face talking about his death . the subject and the situation were too big and unknown , too fearsome and desperate ." did you talk to eve ?"

before i could stop myself , i lashed out ." did you talk to nathan very carefully ?"

"sorry ." i groped for clues to the puzzle ." he had a checkup a couple of months ago . there were  episodes when he said he was feeling really tired , but that was it ."
there elapsed another of those pauses that were impossible to describe , only endure . i gulped the brandy as if it were orange juice . they say men wounded in battle do not , at first , feel anything . then they do . the brandy was a precaution .
nathan had not often mentioned death . not to me , anyway . we were too busy  negotiating life . when he did talk about death , it was to wag a metaphorical finger ." as long as it doesn't come too soon ."

the glass was heavy , with a pattern incised into it . it felt weightly and expensive . i recognized it . we had two exactly the same in lakey street ." we divided things ." nathan reported when he and rose divorced ." straight down the line . i owned her half of verything ." he had been so pleased with his fairness and generosity  thet i had snapped shut my lips and forborne to point out that two matching glasses out of four were not that useful and half a set of silver - plated cutlery limited one's options .

"no . but then i had not been looking for any ."

his face toward the door as if he was listening out for something , someone . a lock of his hair had fallen over his forehead , just tinged with gary . his mouth was slightly open . had he been speaking to rose when his heart shudered . jumped , and declared " enough "? his left arm was tcuked by his side , palm up , fingers curled a fraction .
he was still nathna - he was still evident in the bone structure , the angle of the chin , the width of the fore head . yet he had become remote . between one heartbeat and the nonarrival of the next  , he had weighed anchor and rowed far awy . he had sped past his children , past his life with me , toward a horizon of which i had no knowledge .
" nathna ...." i reached over and smoothed back the lock of hair . tidying him as i knew he liked . his skin held scintillas of warmth and hope flated that i could run from the room shouting ." he's not dead only asleep ."
i touched one of fingers , willing it to curl round mine . what  was there left to read in his face , with the blind closed eyes ? there was no distress as far as i could make out , only surprise ..... and a suggestion  of ...release ?
 in the other room . i could hear the murmur of rose's voice .
had she traced the line from nose to chin , as i did in the gentlest of gestures ? had she bent over to be quite , quite sure that no rogue breath soughed from his mouth , as i was doing ? had she sunk to her knees and whispered ." i don't believe you're dead . nathan , " as i was now doing ?
i shed no tears . shock i think , no easy relief then . again . i esearched nathna 's face for the dues . " why did you not call  me , nathan ?" i begged the still figure , as i knelt in front him like a penitent i knew - i feared - tht nathan had struggled on feeling ill and alone .

the room had manolia walls , a chair by an open window uphlstered in faded chana blue , several pictures , and a photo on the small atble by the sofa .
thye air coming through the window was cool and damp the type that frizzes the hair . it held a promise , though , of spring , for it brought with it the tiniest drift of the flower scent from the shrub bloom beneath the window .
my feet did not seem to be connecting with the floor and a pulse thuddle in my ear . the details of the room accumulated . if i had been cross - examined in court , i could have told you everything about it . how useful she is , the judge might think . how indispensable .
i turned back to the blue chair and concentrated on a cushion . this was made from a mushroom shot silk , looked old and there was a surprising variety of texture and color .
we're planning a supplement on africa in the autumn , i heard nathna say . shouldn't you have kept lucas at home ?
he was sitting well back in it , his body folded in a natural position .

"yes ." i managed a sip of water - it's montaste on my tongue , the accompaniment to my slide from wife to window . i burried my face in my hands .  how was i going to tell the boys ? lucas had felt sick this morning . had he been sick ?
" rose . i must phone home ."
"i'll do that for you ,said rose ." i'll explain that you will be home lates , but i won't go into detail ." she bent over me ." is that best ? i think so ."
after i had drunk the glass of water . rose helped me upright and led me to the door of the sitting room . she stepped back ." he's in there .
